I went over to my local neighborhood Albertson’s today to pick up a few groceries, and saw two unusual things there.

The first one was a pleasant surprise: an issue of Shonen Jump, translated into English and containing translated Yuu Yuu Hakusho manga. It hasn’t even been flipped left/right: it just tells you to start at the other end of the book and read right-to-left. This is a Good Thing™.

The second one was rather shocking: No-Rad antiradiation tablets. Good old Potassium Iodide, which you’re supposed to take in case of a nuclear emergency to block uptake of radioactive fallout into your thyroid. Available on the shelf, amongst the Claritin-related anti-allergen products.

The entire box of No-Rad was full, which means the stuff isn’t flying off the shelves, but the sheer fact that it was on the shelf says that there are enough people worried about nuclear accidents that a major supermarket chain is carrying it on their shelves at eye level.

What next? Fallout shelters?
