Date: 2003-12-08 02:30 pm (UTC)Though now that I have my very own computer at home, a nice big graphics tablet, and a cable/modem hookup, I'm hoping to be on the computer more on weekends. I wanna do an online comic, y'see... but it'll be a while before I get the story sorted out.
And right now I have no time! I'm going back to school at the local community college (they will accept lots more of my SB credits than the 4-year school will -- and then the credits will transfer to the stupid 4-year school anyway...). I need to fulfill a 2-year language requirement, so I'm taking Japanese. But 101-102 last year, 5 credits each, were easier than they should have been. The teacher was not experienced at teaching in a college environment. No syllabus, no homework, etc., etc.
I did learn a lot, but not as thoroughly nor as much as I should have, and my listening and speaking skills are still pretty lacking. This year, I have a really good (but hard) teacher, and though the class is only 4 credits, I've been running to catch up most of the year. I'm finally starting to feel like I'm almost where I want to be...but it's taking up most of my free time.
I'm supposedly running a game, as well, but have put it on hiatus until after my final next week! Back to Arion, but this time with GURPS. As usual, my plot is vaguely defined and half-baked, but working out more or less! Naddath, Oras, Dairion, and Alastha are all back, but now they're all in their 50s with grown children (and teenagers) to worry about. It's been fun so far! Hwfel is still around as an NPC, BTW... though not currently involved. He makes a great colorful background character, though!
What system(s) are you currently playing/GMing? I've been doing GURPS with my gang out here in Virginia, but I'm thinking of getting into AD&D 3.5...assuming I can talk the rest of the gang into it. Probably can, as we all cut our teeth on AD&D!
Do you play board or card games at all? I'm a big fan of Cheapass Games, and some others. A coupla my friends out here are very into keeping up with the best new board and card games (not the collectible variety) coming down the pike, so we play those sometimes. Strange how many of the best ones are imports from Germany...
Do you play video/computer games at all? I only play a few. They're too time-consuming, IMO, and I'm usually not very good with platformers or fighting games -- I just can't get the hang of the controls, remember combos, etc. But there are some I enjoy, even if I'm not very good at them!
Still watching anime, though not so much recently what with not having much spare time. Which series and shows do you like?

Date: 2003-12-08 02:50 pm (UTC)John Carey (the Great and Powerful Turtleneck) got me into Ars Magica, and the Amurgsval campaign ran for a number of years. After being in the medieval paradigm for so long, we decided it was time for a break and we switched to Shadowrun, and the Twilight Brigade game ran for a couple of years until we got tired of the amount of planning needed to pull off a successful operation. (Shadowrun rewards planning because the first box of damage you take makes all your target numbers go up by one.) So we decided to get away from high realism with Feng Shui— did a short run in the default setting to test it out, then I came up with a high fantasy setting that I called Seas of Chaos that’s still running after something like five years. I’m also playing in my friend Paul Meyer’s GURPS-based game that involves time travel, Atlantis, the Illuminati, and all sorts of weirdness; GURPS is a great product line for ripping off ideas, but I have to have a complicated spreadsheet for my own character, the combat system makes me want to write automation tools for it, and I long for the simplicity of Champions. I’m contemplating some of the Eden Studios offerings like Witchcraft for my next modern-day game. I’m not thrilled with class/level systems, though the addition of skills and feats is slowly making AD&D a bit more reasonable.
Give Me The Brain is my favorite Cheapass Game thus far, though the Great Brain Robbery is also pretty cool. Mara (my wife) loves puzzle games, so we have whole bunch of those for our Playstation, and I&rsqou;ve also found I like the Final Fantasy series (I’ve played VII, VIII, IX, and X). I also just played through Deus Ex, which is a really good first person shooter that makes it possible to get through the game with stealth and a sniper rifle if you aren’t the sort who wants to get by on raw in-your-face combat ability. The authors also did a really good job on the conspiracy theory, and if it hadn’t been published before Bush took office, the game would look like a hard-hitting critique of the current administration. :-)
I’m collecting the Yuu Yuu Hakusho DVDs as they come out and the various Miyazaki films like Tonari no Totoro. Giant Robo is also excellent. Just saw Cowboy Bebop on the Cartoon Network recently and liked it, though I don’t think I’ll be buying it on DVD. Read or Die had some really cool steampunk action.
