Speculation from a conversation with John Carey: do cities in the worlds of anime have Giant Robot Shelters into which the citizens flee when giant robot battles break out? (I can just see the signs: yellow gundam silhouette on black disc on rectangular yellow sign, GUNDAM SHELTER in English and Japanese kanji...)

I'm pretty sure I remember various warnings in Evangelion painted on the ground, so that citizens would know where the mecha would emerge from the underground bases. I could have hallucinated that, though.

Yup, there are indeed shelters in Neon Genesis Evangelion where they wait out giant robot battles.

Thanks. Now I have an image in my head of a cute animated PSA about taking shelters from robot battles.

"Remember, kids; when the robots are fighting, you're better off hiding!"

(Psychotically cheerful techno music)
Scarily perky idol singer: Haaaiiii, minna-san, jaianto-roboto-san tachi wa watashi-tachi no tame ni tatakaerunda yo!! Doko e ikimashou ka?
Flock of kids: Jaianto-roboto-sherutaa e!! WAAAIII!
(Psychotically cheerful song about robots fighting for great justice, and how fun it is for us to wait in a hole until it is over)

I love your icon! I need a poster-sized version of it for my cube at work.

I think you need a singing, dancing, cute giant robot. Just to prove how friendly giant, destructive machines of war can be.

The mascot could be like "Mr. Pluto", the happy friendly spokesman for Japan's nuclear industry (no, I am not making him up). Say, "Mr. Robo" or Mr. Roboto".

And the kids in the shelter could be singing "Domo arigato Mr. Ro-

On second thought, never mind. It's a silly idea.

Owww!

Well, I just LOL at work. Seeing the actual phonetics, which conjured the sound of the thing for my imagination, just sent me laughing to tears.

Thank you for a moment to increase my notoriety, as well as regaining 2d6 sanity.

I am very ashamed that I can say things like "Hey, everybody, giant robots are fighting for our sake, so where shall we go? To the Giant Robot Shelter! Yaaaay!" and I have no idea how to say "I would like to open an account in this bank" or other normal Japanese phrases. Damn the bitch goddess that is anime.
