I’ve never been really big on holidays— they’re drastically over-marketed and over-merchandised for my taste. I’m seldom to be found outdoors in December without a Discman in my jacket pocket, so I can play something to screen out the obnoxious Xmas carols. And holiday food just doesn’t thrill me: if I’m going to have a seasonal alcoholic beverage, I’ll take hot buttered rum or hot mulled wine over eggnog, cranberries at all levels of processing just taste nasty to me, and I’ve eaten too many turkeys and mashed potatoes that tasted like wet papier-mâché to be enthusiastic about the traditional holiday bird and trimmings.
When Mara found out that one of my favorite Thanksgiving meals had been a time when I got together with my gaming group to play Ars Magica and order pizza, she was determined to trump this. Fortunately, she has a really great secret recipe for calzone, and there’s a spicy Italian-style turkey sausage that even qualifies as healthy. So each year, Thanksgiving dinner includes her wonderful calzone; she usually arranges for some of the traditional fare for herself, so she isn’t missing out on her own favorites. I’m very happy she takes the trouble to create a nonstandard holiday dish for her iconoclastic sweetie.
