A splendid quote from Tim Powers:

To me, the “message” behind terrorist attacks like this bombing in Madrid or the attack on the World Trade Center is: “We hope this is sufficient to convince you that we can comprehend no goals beyond the murder of strangers and are not to be dealt with as human beings.” The message always comes through loud and clear.

Later on, when someone points out that it’s important not to lose sight of the fact that these are human beings:

Well, I [agree], actually. Heat of the moment exaggeration.

But I hope that if I ever got so twisted as to believe that I could further some “cause” by murdering random strangers, somebody would put me in a cage and lose the key.

The only way I look at it right now is that these people are like animals that have gone rabid. And unfortunately, there is only one course of action when that occurs.

I guess that we can only hope the human animal evolves out of it's inherent trait of violence, and try to teach the next generation that follows us WHY it’s a bad idea to randomly do this stupid shit.
