I think I’m beginning to figure out LJ’s S2 style system. The architecture seems pretty sound, though some of the templates are a little funky. Serious degrees of customization require a lot of copying from the parent templates and editing, and it requires (in addition to the understanding of HTML and CSS for S1) some basic coding skills in C/Perl/JavaScript-like languages.

Things I’ve done to tweak my journal’s style:

• Stop measuring font sizes in points. CSS has small/medium/large defined abstractly for a reason.
• Eschew large tables. I don’t want the page to take forever to render on a slow connection, or have the layout get thoroughly mangled by one weird post. Between HTML and CSS positioning, I can get all the nifty layout things I want without having to use tables.
