I've managed to put together a nifty little Perl script that can
be used to run PGP encrypted mailing lists. Send mail encrypted
with your private key and the list's public key and it decrypts it,
encrypts it with its private key and the public key of each recipient
who can receive encrypted mail and sends it in plaintext to anyone who
isn't up to date on the technology. Send mail in unencrypted, and
it will be encrypted for anyone who can receive it. No more stark
divisions between encryption haves and have-nots.
Of course, running a large mailing list that way would require a lot more CPU power than a standard one, since you'd need to be grinding away PGP in proportion to the number of users of the list. It should be fine for the low-traffic lists at my personal domain, but it'd probably cripple yahoogroups if they implemented one.
But it's one more poke in the eye for Total Information Awareness!
